Kathmandu – The Government of Nepal has introduced significant measures in the fiscal year 2082/83 budget to enhance livestock farming and aquaculture. These steps are part of a broader push to improve rural livelihoods, ensure food security, and increase national productivity in the agriculture sector. Points 48 and 49 of the budget speech specifically detail these strategic interventions.
Large-Scale Livestock Development Initiatives
To meet the growing demand for quality meat and dairy products, the government plans to promote large farms and encourage scientific livestock rearing practices. A total of 850,000 artificial inseminations will be conducted to boost productivity. In addition, NPR 850 million has been allocated for disease control, production, and vaccination, including 5.5 crore doses of animal vaccines to be produced domestically.
Fishery and Coffee Seedling Distribution Programs
In FY 2082/83, the government targets the production of 42.8 million fish fingerlings and distribution of 1 million fruit saplings. Moreover, 20 high-potential local governments will see the establishment of specialized coffee nurseries, from which 1 million coffee seedlings will be distributed to promote sustainable agriculture and exportable cash crops. These interventions reflect Nepal’s broader agenda of modernizing the agriculture sector, improving nutritional outcomes, and strengthening rural economies. By addressing both supply-side and value-chain constraints, the government aims to reduce imports, increase exports, and generate employment opportunities within the country.
